Scan-Mate™ launches officially today after 1 year in development! Congratulations to my team of allies. I love the word “allies” as these are the folks who truly have your back. When the first products were running a day behind, my manufacturer, Micron located in Fitchburg, MA offered to literally fly to DC so we could have Scan-Mate ready at Straumann’s Digital Symposium, which starts tomorrow. Drew Santin, GM, Micron, was then going to jump on another airplane to Columbus, OH and drop off Scan-Mate products to Susan Wingrove, RDH and Mike Smurr, our Director, Professional Channel Sales and Marketing, who are there showing Scan-Mate off at ADHA – the American Dental Hygienists Association Conference this week! You must have incredible allies who deeply believe in you, your vision, your craziness and everything in between. This seems about the right time to also say thank you to Guy La Torre, COO; Mike Smurr; and Lisa Fitzgerald, our ridiculously talented engineer. These are the people who I surround myself with daily. They lift you up when you need lifting and support you when you are taking big chances like today!
Scan-Mate Day is today!
WOW! It all started with a few people and then the list grew longer of talented dental team members who looked at Mouth-Mate, our first product, which is a patient take home product that improves long term hygiene. I always talk to anyone who will listen about the need to take the time to offer advice, time, perspective and paying it forward. This could mean an important introduction, advice on a product launch, networking advice, company advice – good and bad. My point is to always remember that you can impact others, often with very little work.
HOW Scan-Mate started.
My friend and colleague, Dona Schulz, RDH, once said to me about a year ago – “Hey, Mouth-Mate could be a great professional instrument for intraoral scanning and also high-speed suctioning and air polishing. Have you thought about that?” Check out here how Mouth-Mate works as a retraction tool for teenagers with braces or any patient needing improved access in their mouth – i.e. caregivers, young children, special needs patients, etc. I hadn’t thought about Dona’s suggestion but thankfully listened. Listening is so important, and I know this because I talk a lot (working on that!) and I am passionate about a ton of different things. I need to remember to be patient and listen to advice. Thankfully I DID!
The exact same week I received a call from Dr. Jim Stein, a leading prosthodontist/Key Opinion Leader in Boston. Jim said “I need you to stop by and see how we are using Mouth-Mate. We love it for our implant patients, but we are finding it very useful for something else – as a retraction tool for intraoral scanning chairside! We don’t like to use our fingers, or a mirror and Armor Dental should make a new instrument that evolves from the Mouth-Mate design but make it autoclavable, nonreflective and sturdier for professional use.” Jim has always been available for advice and you will see some videos of him using Scan-Mate as we were developing the prototype.
Around the same time last year, I was dropping off Mouth-Mate product to Dr. Zori Rabinovitz, a highly respected periodontist and lecturer in the Framingham area, who always gives me his time. During our visit he said, “Can I offer you some advice? I think Mouth-Mate is going to be a big winner as a professional tool because retraction is so important.”
Taking the leap. Finding your WHY.
With all of this advice, my team got busy…. This is my story and the WHY we developed Scan-Mate. As my friends Tracy Butler and Tonya Lanthier taught me — Before you develop anything, you must answer — What is your WHY?
We hope you enjoy Scan-Mate and find it useful for intraoral scanning and any retraction needs. This latex free instrument is fully autoclavable and has a unique bendable handle and comfortable soft tip, which makes reaching hard areas easy, including 2nd posterior molars, lower distal areas and following along the arch. Both Mouth-Mate and Scan-Mate products are available NOW through our distributors – Ace Surgical, Benco, Henry Schein and Patterson, who I should also thank for believing in our products. And thank you to our scanning manufacturer partners who we have been working closely with during the product development of Scan-Mate including Align, Carestream, Planmeca, Straumann, and 3Shape. Let’s improve the chairside scanning experience for patients together.
Lastly, there are too many to list as I am not accepting an Oscar after all, but thank you to my inner tribe who encouraged me to develop our second dental product and continue to cheer me on! You know who you are.
With tremendous gratitude,
Cherie Le Penske
